BOTOX & DYSPORT

BOTOX VS. DYSPORT: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

ALLY - RN, BSCN

Botox and Dysport are both non-surgical, cosmetic medical injectables used to reduce facial wrinkles, primarily around the forehead and eyes.

Botox and Dysport differ in their trace protein amounts, amounts needed to notice results and length of results.

It can be tough to figure out which method would work best for you, especially if you have not had either before. The medical professionals who are administering these products are always there to help you through the whole process.

If you want to learn more about each product, keep reading. Let’s look at what makes each product similar and different.

HOW DO BOTOX AND DYSPORT WORK?

While Dysport and Botox are produced by different pharmaceutical companies and they differ at the molecular level, they act in the same way. They are essentially the same product.

Ultimately, both will block the different nerve receptors in the face that create the deep lines, mainly around the eyes. Each treatment is intended to smooth areas of your face to noticeably reduce lines while maintaining and preserving your natural look.

While many people think of these products as being only used for cosmetic purposes, there are many other uses for Botox and Dysport. Both of these have therapeutic and medical uses too, some of which include:

  • Chronic migraine relief
  • Hyperhidrosis/Sweating disorders
  • TMJ treatment
  • Bladder dysfunction
  • Eye twitching
  • Muscle contractures

Doctors may prescribe these as treatments if the condition is severe enough.

Both Botox and Dysport are derived from the same neurotoxin known as “botulinum toxin,” which is a purified protein. Where they differ, is the trace protein ingredients.

To help you make an informed decision as to which treatment option is better for you, we will look at each of these treatments individually.

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Botox was developed over 20 years ago as a way to smooth out wrinkles and lines on your face. This is a minimally invasive procedure where injections are applied to areas where patients are wanting to look more natural and smooth. The signals from the nerves will be blocked so that the neurotransmitters sent that cause deep wrinkles, will cease.

Injection time for Botox is quick—it will only take 10 minutes. You probably won’t notice any affects for 5 days, and it takes 14 days to see the full effects of the injection. The results should last, on average, 3 to 5 months.

There is no recovery period or downtime associated with botox injections so you can continue with your day-to-day activities.

WHAT IS DYSPORT?

Dysport is a product that has been around since 1991. Dysport is mainly used to treat frown lines between your eyebrows, but it can be a great option for anyone with moderate to severe wrinkles.

Dysport will cause temporary relaxation in the muscles by preventing the neurotransmitters from sending signals to the facial muscles. The team at Aisthetikos will give you procedure aftercare solutions for any treatment you receive.

While Botox takes several days for the full effects to be noticed, Dysport’s effects will be noticed sooner and also typically lasts a month longer. When Dysport is used, the area that is affected is larger than with botox.

ARE THERE RISKS OR SIDE EFFECTS?

Both of these products do have associated risks with them. Most people have a slim chance of having a bad reaction to Botox or Dysport, but it’s always important to be aware.

Some common, minor side effects for each include:

  • Headache
  • Mild pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness at the injection site

Before receiving a Botox or Dysport injection, discuss the following situations with your specialist:

  • Allergies to lactose
  • Pregnancy
  • Active skin infections
  • Active Autoimmune Disease

Certain medications or supplements may also interact with Dysport and Botox, such as certain antibiotics, allergy medications, and more. Be sure to share any medications or medical conditions with the injection professional before you start any procedure. It’s important to be open, honest, and trusting with the medical professionals that are administering your treatment.
