HOW CO2 LASER RESURFACING WORKS
During treatment, the fractional CO₂ laser creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin, triggering your body’s natural healing response. As collagen and elastin production increases, skin becomes smoother, firmer, and more even in tone and texture.

PRE-TREATMENT & AFTER CARE
Proper preparation and aftercare are essential to ensure optimal results and safe healing following your Lutronic eCO₂ skin resurfacing treatment. Please review the instructions below carefully and reach out to our team with any questions.
To prepare your skin and reduce the risk of complications, please follow these guidelines prior to treatment:
4 Weeks Before Treatment
- Avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners.
- Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.
- Apply DERMA-V™ daily.
Inform us of any history of cold sores. Preventative antiviral medication may be prescribed.
2 Weeks Before Treatment
- Avoid injectable treatments, chemical peels, waxing, or other resurfacing treatments in the treatment area.
Do not use photosensitizing medications unless approved by your provider.
5 Days Before Treatment
- Begin your pre-treatment Exosomes as provided by the clinic. These Exosomes help support skin regeneration, reduce inflammation and downtime, and optimize healing outcomes.
- Discontinue use of actives (retinols, AHA/BHA, Vitamin C), and prescription acne treatments unless otherwise directed.
Use only the skincare products recommended by your provider during this period.
Day of Treatment
- Arrive with clean skin. No makeup, lotion, or sunscreen on the treatment area.
- Wear comfortable clothing; ideally a loose, button up shirt.
- Eat a light meal beforehand and stay well hydrated.
Plan for downtime following your treatment.
Your skin will go through a healing process that includes redness, swelling, warmth, and flaking. This is expected and temporary.
Immediately After Treatment
- Redness and swelling similar to a sunburn are normal.
- Pinpoint bleeding is normal. You may want to dab with gauze provided but do not pick or rub as this can cause scarring and pigmentation.
- Swelling around eyes can sometimes be significant. You may ice and take an antihistamine such as Reactine or Claritin. These will also help with any itching.
- A warm or tight sensation may be present for several hours.
- Apply only the ointment and spray provided by our clinic to support accelerated healing and recovery.
First 2–7 Days
- Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, non-active cleanser. Pat dry with clean towel.
- Starting at 48 hours post-treatment, apply your post-care Exosomes (RE|PAIR) after cleansing to support tissue repair, calm inflammation, and enhance results.
- Apply healing ointment provided to keep the skin moist at all times.
- Avoid picking, scratching, or peeling the skin.
- Avoid heat exposure (hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, workouts).
- Avoid makeup until skin integrity has fully returned (usually 5–7 days). You may apply a tinted mineral SPF with clean hands.
Sun Protection (Critical)
- Avoid direct sun exposure entirely during the healing phase.
- Once permitted, apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 (minimum) daily. Reapply every 2 hours.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.
- Sun exposure during healing can cause pigmentation changes.
Ongoing Care (Up to 4 Weeks)
- Do not use retinoids, exfoliants, acids, or active skincare ingredients until cleared by your provider.
- Continue gentle skincare.
- Expect gradual improvement in skin texture, tone, and firmness over several weeks as collagen regenerates.
Please reach out to us if you experience any of the following during your healing process:
- Increasing redness that spreads beyond the treated area
- Yellow or green discharge, pus, or a foul odor from the skin
- Fever or chills
- Pain that worsens after day 2–3 instead of improving
- Pain not relieved with recommended measures (cold compresses, Tylenol)
- Areas that are not healing within 7–10 days
- Black, grey, or dusky changes in the skin
- Excessive crusting or thick scabbing
- Significant swelling (especially around the eyes) lasting beyond 3–4 days
- Hives, rash, or itching beyond what was discussed as normal healing
- Clusters of painful blisters, tingling, or burning (especially if you have a history of cold sores)
- Early darkening, patchy discoloration, or unusual lightening/loss of pigment
- Redness that persists beyond 2–3 weeks or worsens instead of fading
Call emergency services immediately if you experience difficulty breathing.
Downtime varies based on treatment intensity and skin type but typically ranges from 1-2 days of social downtime where you may want to plan a few days off of work or work from home, and 5-10 days of skin appearing dry. Full collagen remodeling continues for several months, with results improving over time. The addition of Exosomes may help support faster recovery and enhanced skin quality.
